More on Last Night's UFO Report

One of our Head in the Clouds followers, "Dave Hayes the Weather Nut" asked his Facebook friends about the UFO sighting we reported last night, and he's received some interesting responses. One person reported: “Was driving home from work in CT at 1 am on 202 in Pelham saw bright white orb half the size of my car .... Came from above the trees and went probably 10ft. over my cars hood kinda drove under it. I have never seen anything like it freaked me out don't really know what it was I took off as fast as I could...” Another person noted (and we have confirmed) that if you Google Amherst UFO sightings, you will see quite a few, especially recently. Another person pointed out that “there is a DARPA radar/spy array in N Amherst next to Watrobas FWIW.” (Is that true? And if it is true, should I be writing about it here?! And how would that factor into a UFO sighting anyway?) And Dave also reports that someone else he knows reported seeing “bright lights high up in the sky hovering over the CT River, stationary about the same time as the Amherst sighting last night. She assumed it was C5 from Westfield, but thought it odd that it wasn't moving and much brighter than the planes that usually fly over the river.”  So . . . what’s going on here?  Clearly something.

[Added after original posting: Just got confirmation from a second person - not at all connected to the first - who saw the same object last night as the one we originally reported about. Also, read the "comments" below for more updates.]

  1. This report just in from the second person who apparently saw the same object, but before it reached the old landfill area: "We were parked in the lot across from Veracruzana. It was coming up over the buildings and flying over the Commons towards the direction of the landfill. It was 6 something because I got back to Northampton around just before 7. We both noticed it as we got in her car. It was odd that a plane would be flying so low and so slowly. We noticed lots of lights on it but it passed over her car before getting a really good look. So strange!”

  2. Just picked up this comment from a Facebook thread that is running about this sighting: "Did anyone here see or hear any reports of black helicopters being present during this Sighting? Two Black Stealth Helos were maneuvering & hovering low, directly over Northampton Airport runway very close to 6:30PM, when they *suddenly* and literally took OFF over the CT River (roughly north-east of my own position), crossing Rt 9 E toward Hadley & Amherst —they were in a hurry ...These were not normal helicopters; they were unusually quiet for this kind of aircraft and I don't recall seeing a flight configuration quite like this in our area ..." The plot thickens.

  3. I'm not sure what is next to Watrobas, but I definitely know what is being referenced here as I used to live behind Watrobas. It's an unmarked array of satellites on top of large white storage containers. I'd love for someone to look into what these actually are, because I've always wondered. They're not blocked off or anything either, you can walk right up to them, so I can't imagine they're hiding anything.

    1. A few people have weighed in on this, confirming that something satellite and array-like is there. Is it DARPA? No confirmation on that yet. I have a contact who's likely to know, so hopefully I can clear up this mystery, at least, shortly. Thanks!

    2. I am told by an expert in the know locally that the "radar near Watroba's is a dual frequency cloud radar that we built for the US Dept. of Energy for studying the role of clouds in global climate change." Now you know!

    3. Just FYI,"we" in the prior sentence refers to the Amherst-based company, ProSensing.

  4. I work in south amherst, and since summer 2012 I have noticed that once or twice a week, military helicopters perform maneuvers directly about the area around hickory ridge golf course. They are usually very low (3-400 feet) and circle for about ten minutes before leaving the area. Not sure if this is in any way connected, but thought it was worth noting since it is almost precisely where many saw this craft Tuesday night.

  5. A number of people have commented that the descriptions of the object are not only consistent with each other but also come close to describing a drone. And if, in fact, people were seeing a drone, that raises all kinds of other questions - what was a drone doing in downtown Amherst and close to residences, and was it there by design or because of some kind of technical problem? It seems pretty reasonable to assume, given the flight path and altitude, that this craft was being piloted, either within or by remote (and the latter just sounds more plausible). Comments? Thoughts? What do you think it was that people saw?

I took this video shortly before 9:30 p.m. on 1/5/13. I was coming from Northampton on Route 5 and turned onto East Street in Easthampton. Something.... that was on fire (like, a ball of fire) drifted over my vehicle as I passed under the I-91 overpass. Didn't have a chance to pull over until Fort Hill Road in Easthampton. The video was taken from Fort Hill Road looking toward the end of East St/Route 5.
