UFO Sighting Early Evening (it's true)

I didn't see it myself, but a friend who was quite unnerved by the whole thing called me around 6:30 this evening to report having seen a UFO near the old landfill, where the planned solar array will be situated. The friend was driving at the time, when she saw a number of cars pulled off to the side of the road to watch the object, which was about 2-3 cars in size, evenly spherical, silent, with lights, and hovering about 75' off the ground [correction to original posting: object was more "triangular" than spherical, and slightly smaller, comparable in size to 1-2 cars, not 2-3]. She said you could not miss it even while driving, it was that large and close to the ground. It dipped behind the trees, at which point my friend lost sight of it. Someone else who went out a little later to check things out reported seeing what looked like one single "white cloud" high in the sky - she described it as "lit up" like a city. She also noted a few small planes circling the field where the object had been. I called the Amherst police, who had not heard anything. (Which is surprising, all things considered.)

That part of Amherst does get some fly overs from a nearby military base, though nothing like this obviously. So what do you think?  Is this an object from space? Military? Drone-like thing? Apparently a similar object was seen last week in Greenfield, including by ambulance workers who were nearby. Did you see either of these objects? Reports, please! (Meanwhile, I will endeavor to refrain from freaking out in an excited "what-if-it-is-a-UFO" kind of way!)

Note added 1/8/2016: Subsequent Head in the Clouds Amherst postings on the UFO sightings can be found here:

  2. Found out later this evening that there was a report to the Amherst Police Department 4 or 5 weeks ago of a slow moving, silent, set of lights in the sky over Atkins Corner.

    1. I actually saw something similar to this over the 91-291 merge in Springfield. It was about 6:15-6:30. You do see a lot of fly overs because of the the Airbase so that was the first thing I thought of. but I was this big triangle style aircraft. now im not saying its some alien spacecraft, but it was defiantly not your run of the mill type fly overs you see.

    1. Not sure about specific reports, but there are quite a few sightings (some similar objects) in Amherst in recent years.

  4. I saw something last month in Pelham where I live. Slow moving object constant bright light, with fluttering blue and red lights, silent. My husband yelled at me that it was an airplane but the lights were all over blinking like crazy.

    1. It's really been eye-opening since we first reported on this to see just how many people have seen some pretty strange things around here.

  5. I also saw this thing in the sky, with at least four bright lights in front as I walked up my driveway sometime around 6.00p.m. on 1/8; it showed up right above the trees at the end of my neighbors yard, about two hundred yards from where I was, flying very low and very slow, making no sound at all. I was wondering if it was a plane about to land/crash somewhere nearby. After about 10, 15 seconds it disappeared behind another set of trees. I was looking at it from the side, seemed that the front end was sort of rounded, wide and fat, the rear skinny and shallow.

    1. The timing and your description of the object sounds consistent with the other sightings that were reported around the same time. Can you in general terms tell us where you were located at the time?

    2. The cargo planes from Westover, perhaps the C-5 Galaxy, fly low and slow over UMass often.

    3. The C-5 planes make a whole lot of noise. This thing was silent.

  6. I live about half a mile from where this sighting occurred. About a year ago my girlfriend said she was in my backyard taking the dog out and saw a triangular shaped silent craft fly over which had bright lights. She is too worried about sounding like a freak to speak publicly about it so I'm speaking for her.

    1. Understood - though to be clear on this sighting at least, numerous people seem to have seen the same thing, as they are all giving very similar accounts with just the right amount of difference in terms of location of sighting, path along the object's trajectory, etc. That makes this (in my opinion) an extremely credible sighting. We have social media to thank for enabling folks to share and compare experiences and, by doing so, reinforce the reality here - that the reports are from regular people - as far as I know, not a "freak" among them. :)

  7. I saw this around 6.00 walking up on my driveway on Harkness Road. This whatever is was was smaller and flew lower and slower than a cargo plane going to Westover; also, those always make noise, this was silent, and had more and different lights.....

    1. We need to at least consider the possibility that this was a man made craft. Evidence can support that the military has throughout history tested experimental and top secret aircraft and remain silent when questions arise. We should also consider the possibility of this being a drone aircraft. Obama signed authorization less than a year ago allowing drone aircraft to be flown in US airspace. I'm in no way discrediting the possibility of this being an alien craft, I'm only putting forth another theory. I would urge people to call into "The Truthquake" radio show this Sunday between 8-9pm on 103.3fm WXOJ. 413-585-1033. The show will be discussing this recent sighting.

    2. That this was a drone is certainly getting some traction, including among people posting comments to this blog. We think it's a theory worth checking out (see our new post for today, 1/12/13). Doesn't mean it couldn't be "other worldly," but we should certainly check out other theories closer to home first.

  8. My view on anything seen in the sky at night with lights: Why would an advanced alien craft need to have lights on? To see? Not necessary. To be seen? Why would they want to be seen?

    1. Any advanced or superior race would undoubtedly have a deep appreciation for lights, color, sparkle and glitter. It just makes sense.

  9. Hiya! Does the frequency of updating your site depend on specific things or you work on blog articles when you have an inspiration or write blog entries when you have enough time for it? Many thanks in advance for your answer.

  10. Hi Miss Nicoles blog - This is an all-volunteer outfit, and we all have regular paying jobs, so much as we would like to, we can't be focused full-time on the blog. That being said, however, I do main page postings just about daily or more frequently during storms and weather-related events, and other pages are updated either as authors feel inspired (for example, the Weather Cooks author is adding a recipe about twice a month), Night Sky page is updated monthly (to show stargazing info for that month), and info. is added to the other pages as we come across material. I update the Puffer's column every few days. Kelvin, being fictional, waits for inspiration! Ultimately, as a blog that focuses on the intersection between weather and life, new topics present themselves all the time. All we need to do is look around. For example, look for a posting on maple sugaring to appear later today. We also continue to explore (investigate) the UFO topic, and hope to be adding new information on that issue in the next few weeks. That's a long-term exploration, but with respect to UFOs, I'm trying to scope out verifiable info. I'm curious - is there something particular you are interested in? Are you just starting out as a blogger? I checked out your blog and it looks like you are fairly new to the scene. Is that the case? Good luck to you, and come back and visit soon!
