The fish may not be jumping (an ice-covered surface would make jumping pretty painful), but they certainly are biting. Even though it’s late in the season for ice fishing, enthusiasts still have a window of opportunity today and tomorrow at least. A cold front has moved in, the temperatures will be falling during the day (it’s 24 F right now, 13 F with wind chills), and by evening we will be in the single digits, with wind chills around zero.
These pictures were sent in by Aldo, a friend of Head in the Clouds Amherst. He took them two weeks ago, on March 8. For those who wonder about such things, these fish are pickerel. According to Aldo, there are LOTS AND LOTS of pickerel in Puffer's. And apparently pickerel are voracious eaters of other fish species, so you're doing the bass and trout (and every other species) a favor when you catch pickerel. Aldo reports that he caught one trout (or was it bass?) last year, and since then it's been all pickerel.
And some fairly sizeable ones at that.

As of Tuesday, temps climb above freezing during the day, so be cautious if you go out on the ice. I often see folks fishing from the surface way past when it would seem prudent to be there, but I'm no expert. And I've also never fallen into an icy pond. But take heart - as soon as the window closes on ice fishing, there's that other kind of fishing. You know, the warm, snow-free variety. I know it's hard to remember snow-free days, but I promise you - spring and summer will come. Imagine fishing from the shore on a cool summer morning before the heat of the day descends -
and catching lots and lots of pickerel.
